Extreme Poverty Pushes Teenager To Execute A Heist on A Nigerian Bank

The struggle to break free from the painful grip of poverty is real and many are doing anything their desperate hands could do to achieve this. 

The poverty that has eaten so deep into the Nigerian society is pushing many into crimes one would never imagine an average Nigerian is capable of.

News broke out of a sixteen year old who planned yet the biggest Nigerian money heist that mirrors the manoeuvres of the Sergio the Professor in the Spanish series, Money Heist. 

Adekunle Ayomikun almost pulled off the biggest teenage one man operation in the history of the country as he beat the security details to access the bulk room of a new generation bank in Ajah, Lagos Nigeria.

February 25 saw a Lagos magistrate's court sitting in Igbosere area of the state remand the 16-year-old boy at a special correctional centre for boys in Oregun area of the state after finding him guilty of the one count charge of stealing against him.

It was an almost a perfect plan for the teenager as he got into the bank just around 4pm and locked himself up in the toilet till the closing time. 

He proceeded to the bulk room where he made away with ₦340,000 which he kept in his pocket.

His exit plan blew his cover to the notice of the security guards. In his words, 

“I had a lighter with me, so when I was trying to come out of the bank, the lighter attracted the security guards at the bank who saw me, then I ran back into the toilet and locked myself up, again.”

The teenager disclosed that when he eventually came out of the toilet, the security guards searched him and they recovered the N340,000 which he stole from him.

This shows the extent to which this ugly and chastising pangs of poverty has pushed pushed the Nigerian masses. If a teenager could be pushed to initiate such a heist, how much more criminal could the more matured population be thinking to pull off.

We should recall that majority are the youths who are unfortunately unemployed in their millions.

How many more money heists should we be expecting the Nigerian financial institutions to experience? 

Could there be a more sophisticated and well planned one on the way in the face of this unending poverty?

Is crime really the last resort for the average Nigerian in this trying times?

How effective have the government's poverty alleviation programs been in reducing poverty and suffering?
